The kind of behavior exhibited regarding Sarkeesian–the misogyny, the terroristic threats, and the implicit or explicit acceptance of it–is holding the medium back. If we allow this to be tolerated, we risk confirming the denunciations of outsiders that this medium is nothing more than a pastime for immature teenaged boys and adult men suffering from arrested development. It puts video games squarely in the place where those who see it as nothing but kids’ stuff want it to be.

Kommen wir zum Sexismus. Ein anderer Grund für meine bisherige Enthaltung ist viel wichtiger: Es scheint völlig unmöglich zu sein über das Thema zu sprechen, ohne dabei jemanden zu verletzen. Es ist schwer distanziert und sachlich darüber zu debattieren, weil es ganz bestimmt auf einer gewissen Ebene auch ein sehr persönliches und emotionales Thema ist. Der gute Manu sagte einmal in einem Gespräch, dass diese ganze Diskussion ein Minenfeld sei.

Aber was mir dabei auch auffällt: Ich verstehe nicht ganz, was der Ausdruck eigentlich bedeuten soll. Und genau darin liegt auch seine Beliebtheit. Er sagt nämlich eigentlich überhaupt nichts aus. Er vermeidet es, auf das wirkliche Problem hinzuweisen. Wenn es darum geht, daß es Frauen diskriminiert werden, dann kann das eben mit „Diskriminierung“ bezeichnet werden. Das ist keinesfalls weniger, äh, „griffig“. Genau darum geht es aber: Eine Handlung oder Sichtweise irgendwie nebulös als „sexistisch“ zu bezeichnen, ohne widerlegbar zu sein.

Hier liegt offensichtlich die Auffassung vor, dass Sexismus immer eine bewusste, aktive Wahrnehmung und Handlung sein muss. Dass da jemand mit voller Absicht Menschen in Männlein und Weiblein unterteilt und ihnen grundverschiedene Rollen in der Gesellschaft zuteilt, diese Ansichten pflegt und entsprechend auch bei jeder sich bietenden Gelegenheit äußert. Meinem Eindruck nach ist das jedoch oft nicht der Fall.
